Distinguished and Famous people from Tennant Creek
๐ Hilda Tuxworth
Hilda Tuxworth moved to Tennant Creek in 1951 and worked as a nursing sister before becoming one of the town's most energetic historians. From 1965 she interviewed older residents and, with Marjorie Fullwood, collected photographs and documents that might otherwise have disappeared. Tennant Creek: Yesterday and Today first appeared in 1966 and was later expanded. Her preservation work extended to buildings: in 1978 she helped save the former hospital outpatients' department from demolition. It became a museum and archives, later known as Tuxworth-Fullwood House. She also taught ballet and painted local wildflowers.
๐จ Fabian Brown Japaljarri
Fabian Brown Japaljarri helped initiate a men's art programme at Tennant Creek's Anyinginyi health service in 2016. From that beginning grew Tennant Creek Brio, an independent collective closely associated with the Nyinkka Nyunyu Art and Culture Centre. Brown's paintings bring personal and cultural knowledge into an experimental practice that can use reclaimed boards and industrial materials. Works shown in the collective's 2024 Melbourne survey addressed damage to Country and the effects of mining. The group's shared shed outside town became a place for making, conversation and collaboration, with work subsequently reaching audiences at the Biennale of Sydney.
๐ณ๏ธ Ian Tuxworth
Ian Tuxworth grew up in Tennant Creek after his family moved there in 1951. His parliamentary career was closely tied to the Barkly electorate, which he represented through major changes in Northern Territory politics. He served as chief minister from 1984 to 1986, then founded the NT Nationals after leaving the leadership of the Country Liberal Party. He continued representing Barkly until the 1990 election. His mother, Hilda, was the town's historian and community worker, giving the family two distinct places in Tennant Creek's public life: one in political office and another in recording and preserving local history.
